Chase Crum is a U.S. Army veteran, a Shriner, an IT infrastructure manager, and a member of The Linux Foundation. This certainly does not capture all that defines Chase, but it begins to illustrate where he derives his ideas about Linux, community and giving back. Chase also represents a growing majority of systems administrators and IT managers who are using Linux both at work and at home.

It is this collective support from thousands of individual members that enables The Linux Foundation to provide important services for industry and community.

先週の LinuxCon は、IDC 社の Al Gillen 氏、Forester 社の Jeffrey Hammond 氏をはじめ、Linux/OSS 分野のビジネス リーダーによるすばらしいコンテンツが目白押しでした。その一つに、IBM Worldwide Linux Strategy のディレクターである Jean Staten Healy 氏のセッションがありました。彼は CIO らによる Linux の評価とその変化について取り上げていました。
 
10 年前に IBM が Linux に 10 億ドルを投じたおかげで、エンタープライズ データ センターにおける Linux はさらに躍進し、現在に至っています。当時、IBM には 3 つの構想がありました。

Forrester: おめでとうオープンソーサー、あなたがたが勝者です

Forrester 社のアナリストである Jeffrey Hammond は、今日の基調講演で、企業におけるOSSの採用動向について語りました。(スライドはこちらからダウンロードできます。) Hammond によれば、OSS はキャズム (大きな溝) を超えて世界中の企業に定着したということです。これは 800 人の LinuxCon 来場者にとっては驚きではありませんでした。しかし彼のデータは、次のような興味深い事実も示していました。IT 運用者は、低コストだという理由からだけでなく、技術革新やサポート充実を実現するために Linux を選んでいるということです。
