Linux T シャツのデザイン募集

本日、Linux.com に新しくオンライン ストアを開店しました。ここにあるのは、展示会で配られる (そしてたぶん車を拭くのに使われる) ようなロゴ T シャツではありません。Linux.com Store にある T シャツ、マグ、ステッカー、ベビー服は、全くオリジナルで、Linux とフリー ソフトウェアの不遜さや知性やスタンスが感じられます。ちなみに私のお気に入りは、次の 3 点です。

組込み Linux の学習 (無料ウェビナー再開)

ここ数年、組込みデバイスにおける Linux の使用が急増しています。テレビ、電話、車、ATM、その他ほとんどのものに Linux が入っています。Linux は最近の Mobile World Congress で、Samsung の Bada、新しい各種の Android フォン、Linux Foundation の MeeGo プロジェクト、Palm をはじめとするあらゆる製品発表を事実上独占しました。今日の組込み Linux には破壊的な勢いがあり、Linux が 90 年代から 2000 年代にかけてデータ センターからプロプライエタリな Unix OS 群を締め出したのとよく似ています。

持続性のある構築

カーネル デベロップメント コミュニティが 2.6.12-rc2 commit と git ソース コード管理システムを使用して暫定的にスタートしてから、5年経ちました。当初は手探りでした。突然のコア ツール変更後、開発プロセスが元のスピードに戻るのにどのくらい時間がかかるのか、誰もわかりませんでした。しかし git はほとんどすぐに有効になり、その後の作業を残すだけとなりました。開発プロセスを効率化することが git の利点ですが、カーネルがどのように開発されているのかがよくわかる、というメリットもあります。つまり、変更されていないコードについてもチェックすることができます。
 
この開発プロセスのスピードは衝撃的です。近くリリースされる 2.6.33 カーネルは、約 11,000 個の変更が含まれる製品で、約 100 万行のコードがその変更の影響を受けています (2.6.33 の統計値の詳細については、こちらを参照)。この程度の数字は、3 ヶ月の開発サイクルではとるに足らないものです。あらゆるものは常に高速に動いています。

Microsoft/Amazon のニュースについて

Microsoft は本日発行したニュース リリースで、Amazon と特許クロス ライセンス契約を締結したと発表しました。またこのニュース リリースでは、同契約に一定のテクノロジ － すなわちオープン ソース ソフトウェアを使用する “Kindle”、および Amazon 社による Linux ベース サーバーの使用 － が含まれていることも明示しています。
企業はよく包括的なクロス ライセンスに合意しますが、詳細な特許は公開せず、それに関するプレス リリースはめったに発行しません。このクロス ライセンスでも「広範な製品とテクノロジ」をカバーしていると言っていますが、Microsoft は Linux やオープン ソース (「プロプライエタリなソフトウェア」に対するもの) をターゲットに選び、具体的な特許については何も言及してません。
 
多くのテクノロジ企業が特許に膨大な投資をしていることも、クロス ライセンス契約が珍しくないということも無意味な話です。旧式の武器を大量に保持している 2 つの事業体が緊張緩和の交渉の必要性を感じた、という事実に驚くことはありません。

A Big Victory for F/OSS: Jacobsen v. Katzer is Settled

At 9:00 AM EST today, the parties to Jacobsen v. Katz filed a settlement agreement with the U.S. Federal District Court for the Northern District of California. In doing so, they brought an end to one of the most important legal cases to date affecting the continued success of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). The terms of the settlement mark a complete victory for Jacobsen.

Please Welcome MeeGo

I don’t usually post twice a day, but today was opening day in Barcelona of the Mobile World Congress, the biggest mobile show of the year, and the announcements were popping thick and fast.  One of those announcements unveiled a new mobile platform called MeeGo - a new open source contender in the race to power the broad array of devices that are rapidly proliferating in the mobile marketplace.  And, I’m happy to say, MeeGo will be hosted by The Linux Foundation.  We’ve been working for some time on this,  and we’re very pleased that the project has now gone public.

CodePlex Foundation Picks Paula Hunter as Executive Director
